In today’s world, having an online presence is key, and that’s where SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, plays a big role. It’s like the secret recipe that helps people find your work online. But there’s a new, broader way of looking at this: Holistic SEO. Think of Holistic SEO as the art of making your online space visible and truly reflective of who you are as an artist at the core. It goes beyond just using the right words or links. It’s about creating an online home that’s genuinely you, making it easier for the right audience to connect with your work and story.

Yes… valuing connection, engagement, and diving deep into our purpose artist should get us all feeling warm and fuzzy. However, it’s more than just a ‘feel good’ tactic. Holistic SEO strategies work really well, especially for photographers and other artists.

Understand exactly what holistic SEO means

Holistic SEO isn’t just a technical strategy; it’s a philosophy. It passes the traditional boundaries of SEO, weaving together various elements like content quality, user experience, technical performance, and emotional connection to build more than a ranking but an experience online. This approach views your website as a living ecosystem where every part works together to create a compelling, engaging, and searchable online identity.

Unfortunately, holistic SEO isn’t as simple as saying put this here, and you’re done. However, it’s really intuitive, and when it clicks, it’s a much easier way of looking at SEO.

The Key Differences between a traditional and holistic take at SEO

Content Depth and Quality: Traditional SEO often focuses on keywords and phrases to improve rankings. Holistic SEO, on the other hand, dives deeper. It’s about creating content that’s not only keyword-rich but also meaningful, engaging, and valuable to your audience. It’s storytelling that connects, not just words that rank.

User Experience (UX): While traditional SEO might overlook the user experience, holistic SEO places it at the forefront. It’s about how quickly your site loads, how easy it is to navigate, and how well it engages visitors. A seamless UX leads to longer site visits, which in turn signals to search engines that your site is valuable.

Often, traditional SEO says your site needs to load quickly and be structured well, but diving into what the means and emphasizing UX over other aspects is a big difference with a holistic approach.

Expanding your keywords: In a traditional key phrase strategy we often go after those 2-3 big key phrases in our area: the ones we are sure we want to be number 1 for. But with a holistic approach, we take 3 steps back and really look at where else we can capture our potential clients’ engagement before they get to that price-shopping stage.

Emotional Connection: Holistic SEO recognizes the power of an emotional connection. It’s about creating a brand voice and imagery that resonates deeper, making your audience feel understood, inspired, and connected. When people connect to your website, impressions turn into engagement.  Engagement turns into conversions. And conversions pay the bills.

The Benefits of Adopting a Holistic Approach

Sustainable Rankings: Holistic SEO strategies are designed for longevity. Focusing on comprehensive quality and user experience makes your site more likely to sustain its rankings over time. Which is something we all can applaud.

Authentic Audience Engagement: This approach helps attract an audience that is genuinely interested in your photography or art. It’s about creating connections with the people you were meant serve, not just clicks.

Brand Integrity and Trust: Holistic SEO helps maintain your brand’s authenticity. You build trust and credibility with your audience by aligning your SEO efforts with your brand’s core values and message. Trust and credibility lead to better engagement.

Adaptability: As search engines evolve, a holistic approach keeps you ahead of the curve.

Holistic Vs Traditional SEO Strategies

DIY Holistic SEO: Where to Start

If you’re interested in working 1:1 on an SEO overhaul, you find my SEO services here. However, if you aren’t ready for that commitment, here are a few steps you can take on your own to start shifting towards a holistic approach to SEO.

  1. Audit Your Website: Look at your website with fresh eyes. Is the content engaging and relevant? Is the site easy to navigate? Does it load quickly?
  2. Understand Your Audience: Dive into who your audience is. What are their needs, desires, and pain points? How can your content address these? What questions might they Google BEFORE they Google Your City + Family Photographer.
  3. Content is King: Create content that’s not just about keywords. Tell stories, share experiences, and provide value. Authenticity in content is paramount. Especially in a world where anyone can spit out a blog post from ChatGPT.
  4. Optimize for User Experience: Ensure your website is mobile-friendly, has fast loading times, and a straightforward navigation structure.
  5. Build Emotional Connections: Use your brand voice to speak directly to your audience’s values and heart. Visuals, tone, and messaging should all resonate on an emotional level.
  6. Measure and Adjust: Use analytics to understand what’s working and what isn’t. SEO is an ongoing journey, not a set-and-forget strategy.
